Candlesticks
Unknown Maker
- Vienna, Austro-Hungary 1872-1922|
Candles have long been associated with the Divine in many cultures. Since antiquity it has been the sacred duty of Jewish women to welcome Shabbat by kindling lights at sundown, welcoming the day of rest. While no fixed number of candles is prescribed for the ritual, two lights are often cited as a minimum fulfillment of the Law. Many different forms of lamps have been used over time and around the world.
